Mark Lipka's first professional comic work began in 1991 with Rock Fantasy Comics on an unpublished story that featured musicians, Mick Fleetwood and Ozzy Osbourne. He worked for several independent comic book publishers while also working on other commercial art projects throughout much of the 1990s. He was mentored by artists , Karl Waller and Nathan Massengill. It wasn't until 1997 that Mark had his work published by a major publisher with the release of "Savage Dragon: Sex & Violence" for Image Comics. After beginning work on The Savage Dragon, he started to receive mentoring from, fellow comic book artist, Brian Stelfreeze.
In 2006, he taught a course at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. The course he taught was Comics Cinematography/Sequential Art in which he provided lectures and demonstrations that was heavily geared towards teaching his students how to translate written works and ideas into sequential art that tells a story.
